Ischia, or the Emerald Isle, arose from the Tyrrhenian Sea as the final product
of hundreds of volcanic explosions, and earned its moniker because of the thick
pine groves colouring its landscape. A mostly agrarian society until the 1950s,
a world-wide, post-war economic boom led to global wanderers discovering the
island's forgiving climate, turquoise seas, pristine beaches and many thermal
spas.
The healing powers of Ischia's mineralized spring waters are said to cure everything
from gout to chronic rheumatism. The spas are still warmed by the island's now-silent
volcano, Mt.
Epomeo, and are ideal for naturopathic therapies. The historic town of Ischia
is protected by the 15th century Ischia
Castle (Castello d'Ischia), which is connected to the town by a narrow
bridge. The sea-side village and fishing hamlet of Sant'Angelo,
located in Serrara
Fontana, typifies island culture, while the Museo
Archeologico di Pithecusae at Lacco
Ameno houses artifacts from Ischia's long history. Sun-worshippers may set
up their umbrellas at all of these locations, as well as Forio,
Barano
d'Ischia and Casamicciola
Terme.
